UNDERSTANDING NATURAL STONE

Natural stone is shaped by nature over millions of years, making every piece unique. Variations in color, veining, movement, and texture are natural characteristics that give each tile its individual beauty. Understanding these differences before ordering helps set the right expectations and ensures confidence in your selection.

Every piece of natural stone is shaped by nature over millions of years. Its unique shade, veining, and movement are not flaws—they're the qualities that make each installation timeless and unmistakably authentic.

WHY EVERY PIECE IS UNIQUE

What is Shade & Color Variations?

Shade and color variation describes the natural differences in color, veining, movement, texture, and pattern that can occur from one tile to another within the same product. These variations are especially common in natural stone, where every piece is formed over millions of years through unique geological conditions, mineral composition, and quarrying layers.

Porcelain and ceramic tile may also display shade variation due to differences in manufacturing, glazing techniques, and production batches. While these products are more consistent than natural stone, slight variations in tone and pattern are still considered normal.

Important: Shade and color variation is a natural characteristic of the material and is not considered a manufacturing defect. Because every project is unique, we recommend ordering a sample before placing your full order to better understand the color, texture, and overall appearance of the product.

THE V-RATING SYSTEM

Understanding the V0–V4 Variation Scale

The V0–V4 variation scale is an industry standard used to describe the amount of shade, color, and pattern variation you can expect within a tile collection. Products range from V0, which offers a highly consistent appearance, to V4, where each piece displays significant natural variation. Understanding these ratings helps you choose the look that best fits your project and design style.

V0Uniform

Very little to no visible variation. Tiles have a consistent color and appearance.

V1Slight

Minor differences in shade or texture create a subtle, uniform look.

V2Moderate

Significant variation in color, veining, and texture creates a rich, dynamic appearance.

V3High

Noticeable differences in shade and tone. Creates a rich, dynamic surface with natural movement and depth.

V4Substantial

Bold variation between pieces creates a one-of-a-kind installation with striking natural character.

DESIGN INSIGHT

Why Natural Variation Matters

Natural stone is never perfectly uniform—and that's exactly what makes it beautiful. Every piece is shaped by nature, creating subtle differences in color, veining, texture, and pattern that give each installation its own distinctive character.

Designers and architects often seek natural variation because it creates spaces that feel authentic, timeless, and full of depth.

  • Unique Character: Every installation is one of a kind, with no two pieces exactly alike.
  • Natural Depth: Variations in color and veining add movement, texture, and visual interest.
  • Timeless Beauty: Genuine stone develops character that manufactured materials cannot replicate.
  • Authentic Material: Natural variation is a hallmark of real stone—not a defect.
  • Designed by Nature: Millions of years of geological formation create patterns that cannot be reproduced.

Getting the Best Results from Natural Variation

Understanding natural variation before installation helps create a balanced, authentic look that showcases the beauty of genuine stone.

Blend Material

Use material from multiple boxes throughout the project to achieve a natural distribution of color, veining, and pattern.

Dry-Lay for the Best Results

Dry-lay the material before installation to evaluate the natural variation and create a balanced blend of color, veining, and pattern across the finished surface.

Choose Grout Carefully

Grout color has a significant impact on the finished appearance. Matching grout creates a seamless look, while contrasting grout highlights the shape and pattern of each tile. Testing grout with a sample is recommended before making your final selection.

Inspect Before Installation

Review all material before installation to ensure you are satisfied with the color, finish, and natural variation. Installation constitutes acceptance of the product.

Order from the Same Production Lot

For the most consistent appearance, purchase your full quantity from the same production lot whenever possible. Ordering an additional 10–15% is recommended to allow for cuts, waste, and future repairs.

Embrace Natural Variation

No two pieces of natural stone are exactly alike. Differences in color, veining, texture, and pattern are inherent characteristics that contribute to the beauty and uniqueness of every installation.

⚠ Important Ordering Information - Please review the following before placing your order.

Natural Variation

Natural stone—including marble, travertine, limestone, onyx, basalt, quartzite, and similar materials—naturally varies in color, shade, veining, texture, and pattern. These characteristics are inherent to the material and are not considered manufacturing defects or valid grounds for return, refund, or exchange.

Product Photography

Product images are intended to represent the general appearance of each material but cannot guarantee the exact color, shade, veining, texture, or finish of the product you will receive. Every piece of natural stone is unique.

Production Lots

Materials from different production lots or quarry batches may exhibit natural differences in color and shade. We recommend ordering your full project quantity at one time to help maintain the greatest possible consistency throughout your installation.

Inspect Before Installation

All products should be carefully inspected before installation. Installation constitutes acceptance of the material. Claims related to shade variation, color variation, or visible cosmetic differences cannot be accepted after installation. These guidelines are consistent with recognized industry standards established by the Tile Council of North America (TCNA).

Sample Recommendation

We strongly recommend ordering samples before purchasing your full order. Viewing the material in your own space under your lighting conditions is the best way to evaluate its color, texture, finish, and natural variation.
